Distribution of habitat M.AtMB.Ro.MixCor Mixed cold water coral community on Atlantic mid bathyal rock and other hard substrata

  • Records used to define the biotope (core records)
  • Other records assigned to this biotope, marked as 'certain'
  • Other records assigned to this biotope, marked as 'uncertain'
  • Predicted extent of the level 3 (for sublittoral rock & deep sea) or 4 (for sublittoral sediment) habitat

Point data based on records in the UK Marine Recorder Snapshot. Predicted habitat extent is from UKSeaMap.

Description

This broad community contains those biotopes where corals dominate but do not form a living coral reef. A mixture of different coral types can be present. Associated species are similar to 'sparse encrusting community', including sponges and ophiuroids. Discrete colonies of Lophelia pertusa occur on Atlantic mid bathyal rock. It is likely that this community also occurs in the upper bathyal but it was not recorded in data used to define biotopes.
